Best Marin Neighborhoods for Families with kids moving from SF
For many San Francisco families considering a move to Marin, one of the first questions is simple:
Where in Marin should we actually live?
Marin County is made up of many small towns and neighborhoods, each with its own personality, pace, and community feel. While the entire county shares a strong connection to nature and family life, the experience of living in one town can feel quite different from living in another.
When I work with families relocating from San Francisco, the conversation rarely starts with square footage or even home prices. Instead, we begin with a more important question:
What do you want everyday life to look like for your family?
Do you imagine kids biking around the neighborhood with friends? Walking to town for coffee or school pickup? Living close to trails or beaches? Being part of a tight-knit school community?
Different Marin towns offer different versions of that lifestyle. Below are some of the communities many families explore as they begin considering a move north of the Golden Gate.
Mill Valley
Mill Valley is often one of the first places San Francisco families explore when considering Marin.
Nestled at the base of Mount Tamalpais, it offers a beautiful blend of small-town charm, excellent public schools, and easy access to hiking and nature. Many neighborhoods feel tucked into the trees, and outdoor recreation is woven into everyday life.
At the same time, Mill Valley maintains a lively downtown with restaurants, cafés, and community events that create a vibrant local culture.
For families who love the outdoors but still want a strong town center and a relatively easy commute to San Francisco, Mill Valley often feels like a natural transition.
Larkspur & Corte Madera
Located in central Marin, Larkspur and Corte Madera offer a convenient balance of accessibility and family-friendly neighborhoods.
These towns are popular with families who want excellent schools and quick access to both Highway 101 and the ferry system for commuting into San Francisco.
Downtown Larkspur in particular has a charming small-town feel, with restaurants, boutiques, and community events that bring residents together. Many families appreciate the combination of quiet residential neighborhoods and easy access to everyday conveniences.
Kentfield & Greenbrae
Kentfield and Greenbrae are known for their beautiful residential neighborhoods, strong public schools, and central location within Marin.
Many families are drawn to the area because it offers a quieter, more residential environment while still being very convenient for commuting and accessing nearby towns.
The combination of established neighborhoods, proximity to open space, and a strong school community makes this area a popular choice for families relocating from San Francisco.
San Anselmo
San Anselmo has a classic small-town feel that many families find incredibly appealing.
Its downtown is filled with locally owned shops, cafés, and restaurants, and community events—from parades to seasonal festivals—create a strong sense of connection among residents.
Neighborhoods tend to feel close-knit, and many families are drawn to the sense that kids grow up surrounded by familiar faces and long-standing community traditions.
Fairfax
Fairfax has a personality all its own.
Known for its laid-back, outdoorsy, and slightly quirky vibe, it attracts families who value nature, creativity, and a relaxed pace of life. It sits at the gateway to some of Marin’s best hiking and mountain biking trails, making it especially appealing to outdoor enthusiasts.
The town also has a strong sense of local culture and independence that gives it a unique charm within Marin.
Tiburon
Tiburon offers a coastal lifestyle that many families find incredibly special.
With stunning bay views, beautiful waterfront paths, and a charming downtown area, Tiburon combines natural beauty with a peaceful residential feel. Families are often drawn to its excellent schools, strong sense of community, and proximity to San Francisco.
For my own family, one of the unexpected joys of living here has been being at the base of Ring Mountain. It’s something of a hidden jewel, with miles of hiking trails and sweeping views that stretch from Oakland to San Francisco, across Richardson Bay, and all the way to Mount Tamalpais and beyond. Being just minutes from the trailhead has become one of my favorite ways to get exercise, clear my head, and gain a little perspective.
Ross
Ross is known for its highly regarded public schools and peaceful residential neighborhoods.
The town itself is small and primarily residential, but many families enjoy being just minutes from the restaurants, shops, and community life of nearby San Anselmo and Larkspur.
With beautiful tree-lined streets and a quiet atmosphere, Ross often appeals to families looking for a calm and private residential environment.
San Rafael
(For families exploring further north)
As the largest city in Marin County, San Rafael offers a wide variety of neighborhoods and housing options.
Families are often drawn to San Rafael for its combination of accessibility, parks and open space, and somewhat greater housing variety compared with southern Marin towns. Neighborhoods such as Terra Linda, Peacock Gap, and parts of the Dominican area are especially popular with families.
San Rafael also offers a vibrant downtown, cultural amenities, and easy access to both Highway 101 and the rest of Marin County.
Novato
(For families exploring further north)
Further north, Novato offers a more spacious and suburban lifestyle while still maintaining Marin’s strong connection to nature.
Families often appreciate the larger homes, quieter neighborhoods, and access to hiking and open space. The town has multiple community parks, family-oriented neighborhoods, and its own charming downtown areas.
For families who want a little more room to spread out while staying within Marin County, Novato can be an appealing option.
The Right Neighborhood Is the One That Fits Your Family
While these towns are among the places many San Francisco families explore first, the “best” Marin neighborhood ultimately depends on what matters most to your family.
Some families prioritize walkability and town centers. Others care most about proximity to trails or beaches. Still others are focused on school communities, commute times, or simply having more space for daily life.
Finding the right place is less about choosing the most popular town and more about understanding which environment best supports the life you want to build.
Exploring Marin with Fresh Eyes
For families early in the process, one of the most helpful things you can do is simply spend time in different towns.
Walk through neighborhoods. Visit local parks and libraries. Stop for coffee downtown. Notice how people move through their day.
Often, the right place begins to reveal itself not through research alone, but through the feeling you get when you’re there.
